Tips for Keeping an Effective Medical Blog

Written by Lynne Murray

Regardless of the size or specialty of a healthcare practice, keeping a medical blog is often in one's best interest. Perhaps the biggest benefit of keeping a medical blog is that it will help current and potential patients of your practice gain valuable information about you and your practice.

Additionally, blog writing can help bolster your presence on the Internet. Search engines such as Google or Bing recognize original and unique content, so blog writing can help establish your practice as an authority in the field.

Don't worry if you are not the strongest writer! A medical blog can be done at your own pace.  While it is best to post to your blog regularly, it does not need to be elaborate just informative.

Here are some tips for keeping an effective medical blog:

  • Keep it short and sweet. Always remember that the primary goal of a medical blog is to reach patients! So, make sure your content is educational, yet still patient-friendly. It's also important to remember that the readers of your blog probably do not have a medical degree. Try to use terms on your blog that your patients will understand, and will want to read more about. Also, try not to go overboard with the length of your blog posts. Instead, keep it short and sweet (between 350 and 400 characters), so your patients will get the most out of reading your blog.
  • Answer your patient's questions. Blog entries are especially useful for delivering information to your patient, and answering questions that are important to them. Using your blog forum to answer common questions about procedures, conditions, or illnesses will help establish your authority as a medical professional, as well as attract new patients to your practice!
  • Share relevant, and timely, content. The great thing about blog writing is that you can post about almost any subject. For example, you can write a blog post about news that is relevant to your specialty, or to the healthcare industry in general.  Blog posts can also be specific to the current season. For example, if it's spring time and you are an orthopedic surgeon, you can write a post about preventing injuries during warm weather sports such as golf or tennis.
